Hmm... sounds like a bug.
Do you have "Right-to-left language support" enabled in Preferences->Language ?

What you get after a second is a preview of what the formula will look like in the final output.

You can turn off instant preview in the Preferences. Or, you can change the colour of the previewed snippet, also in Preferences.
