What about improving the appearance of key-bindings in the statusbar? Increase space between key-bindings and interchange the background colour for each key-binding (light background - darker background - light background - darker background - ... ).
I retouched a screenshot of the current appearance (attached pictures from the "original" & the retouched version). Its not my best photo-editing attempt (there is also a huge empty space in the retouched picture -- couldn't invest more time on it) but I think it's clear enough of what I am thinking.
