You can use the document wide option in the document settings menu, but this will affect all floats of your document. I would therefore use the option "here if possible" and not " here, definitely".
Why is the default placement so bad? Any ideas as to why the default is so bad? Suggestions?
The default isn't bad, it works for most documents. For more infos about the float settings, have a look at the EmbeddedObjects manual.
