To answer my own question: If I run pdflatex for exporting my LyX document, the error message is package inputenc Error: Keyboard character used is undefined package inputenc Error: Keyboard character used is undefined package inputenc Error: Keyboard character used is undefined package inputenc Error: Keyboard character used is undefined Underneath the error box is an empty box which is filled with an additional error message if -and only if- I click on the lines above showing the part of the reference which can't be handled for each line. This makes it easy to find the errors in the bib file by using the search command of JabRef. Wolfgang
