While the banner is indeed more professional, it also looks like 50
other banners...

Currently the logo is not used consistently. For example, the bird is used as application icon, while the splash screen shows a logotype without the bird.

Combining the splash screen logotype with the bird you get too many fancy elements and colors, so that's why I made something with the bird and a more simple logotype. Then the bird is immediately recognized as the LyX logo and things don't become overly fancy and complex.

I don't think every design element needs to be completely unique. If the logo itself is already unique and colorful, it's better not too add a lot of additional colors and fancy fonts.
