Max,

  Web-based fora (which I assume is what you mean by a 'discussion board'
will not solve your problem. You still need to scan threads or subjects to
see what's interesting to you. Same process in your MUA or web browser.

  What Walter suggested is the best solution: set up separate files for each
mail list and use a tool like procmail to define recipes that sort incoming
mail into the appropriate box. I assume you're using a GUI mail user agent
-- perhaps Thunderchicken -- and that works just as well as pine, mutt, elm,
or any other MUA.

  It's easy to tab through the various files from within your MUA and easily
decide what you want to read and what you want to delete.

  One big advantage (for many of us) of mail lists over web-based fora is
that the former push information to you while with the latter you need to
actively go to the appropriate web page and pull in the information.
