It shouldn't either. I am not familiar with Ubuntu which is now a very wide 
fork from Debian. So it may allow you to do things that are not desirable and 
would never be permitted in Debian, for security and other reasons? But I 
don't know.

This could very well be a bug, one would hope so. Maybe the Ubuntu mailing 
lists could help? I certainly can't duplicate it in Debian. You're obviously 
not working as root all the time?
