I've had good luck with tex2word, converting an entire book with many hundreds of equations. And word2tex works pretty well in the reverse direction. Just Google to get information. Neither is perfect, but the results, especially for equations, seem much better than the alternatives you mention. (Grindeq is a similar product, but I have no experience with it.) Of course, these solutions cost money and involve proprietary software, which may be a deal-breaker for some people. ...dave case
