Thanks for all the replies. I like the suggestion below about possibly incorporating a feature within LyX. Since LyX already has a "Track Changes" feature, I wonder whether it would be difficult to add a "Show Changes" feature with respect to a different LyX file.
In the meantime it seems like diff is the way to go.
