The problem is simply that the page style "headings" upcases everything, incl. LaTeX commands. So if you color the chapter red, \textcolor{red} is used, but in the heading, textcolor{RED} is requested, which is unknown. A solution, as already outlined, is to define a textcolor RED in preamble. Note that the problem also does not occur if you use another page style (such as fancy) that does no upcasing. Jürgen
