I always convert to .pdf and don't like to see the image in the LyX editor,
only in the created pdf. But are there other advantages that I don't get?

Honestly, you might find that answers to your many questions come much
faster if you start regularly using the Help -> menu in LyX. The User's
Guide and Embedded Objects manual are helpful here, and they're very good.
(Incidentally, in checking the EO manual just now I think I found a bug
(sent under separate cover).
