Thanks for your replies, I visited the page Jürgen suggested, and perhaps this is a silly question but how do I add an optional parameter to a caption (to make it look different in the table of figures than in the actual caption text)? This would be somewhat of a workaround to have a footnote for the caption

Like the attached. This probably doesn't look like you want it, but footnotes in floats are particularly tricky.
