When you install LyX using this installer:

Thanks a lot, installation worked like a breeze :-)

Good to hear that it worked.

But nevertheless I am stuck :-( There are lots of templates, but none
for books, as far as I can see.

You can take for example the Embedded Objects manual from the help menu as starting point for your own book. It uses the document class "koma-script (book)". (The EmbeddedObjects manual uses a lot stuff in the document preamble, you can shorten it to this for your book:

--------

\usepackage{ifpdf} % part of the hyperref bundle
\ifpdf % if pdflatex is used

 % link all cross references and URLs in pdf output
 \usepackage[colorlinks=true, bookmarks, bookmarksnumbered,
 linkcolor=black, citecolor=black, urlcolor=blue, filecolor=blue,
 pdfpagelayout=OneColumn, pdfnewwindow=true,
 pdfstartview=XYZ, plainpages=false, pdfpagelabels,
 pdfauthor={your name}, pdftex,
 pdftitle={Your title},pdfsubject={your subject},
 pdfkeywords={LyX}]{hyperref}

\else % if dvi or ps is produced

 % link all cross references and URLs in dvi output
 \usepackage[ps2pdf]{hyperref}

\fi

% redefine the \LyX macro for PDF bookmarks
\def\LyX{\texorpdfstring{%
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  {LyX }}

-------

Adjust it for your needs.

Opening for example elsart.lyx (without knowing what it means),

This is layout for papers written for journals of the Elsevier publishing group.
Read the section "Chapter 4 Special Document Classes" of the Extended Features manual in the help menu for infos about document classes.
