Is there a "stable" 1.5.x?
Not yet. We're still in pre-release. But a lot of people are using
1.5.rc1 in a fairly serious way.
Does 1.5.x use the same native format as 1.4.2?
No. But you can cross-convert.
Is 1.5.x as reliable and stable as 1.4.2 (meaning it never screws up)?
We believe and hope that 1.5.0 will be an improvement over 1.4.x in
terms of stability. Early version of 1.4.x were not as stable as the
1.3.x series.
I'm using Mandriva 2007. Anyone know how difficult it would be for me to
install 1.5.x in /usr/local/bin without trashing /usr/bin/lyx, which is
1.4.2?
Trivial. Just compile from source. The default ./configure && make &&
make install will put the binaries into /usr/local/bin/. NOW, an
important thing: Don't use the same user directory for both 1.4.x and
1.5.x. Create a new user directory, e.g., ~/.lyx15/, and create a script
(e.g., /usr/local/bin/lyx15) that will run:
/usr/local/bin/lyx -userdir ~/.lyx15/
Otherwise, you will have problems.
