An inline formula is just that: math typeset within a sentence beside the text. A display formula stands alone: it is not surrounded by text on the sides. You can find a good discussion of the environments in the LaTeX Companion. It takes several pages ... The usual advice is not to use eqnarray. Cheers, Alan Isaac
