Okay, a bit of simple digging revealed that it's a problem specific to
Mac OS 10.4.9 Finder. The error message (repeated below) pops up when
I use the Finder downloading procedure, that is: click on the ftp link
in Safari and then drag the .zip file onto the Desktop.

Connecting to the ftp directory through Terminal/Darwin allowed me to
download and unzip the file without difficulty.
It's still a mystery, but it's no longer a problem (for me, anyway).

Odd. I used Firefox to download initially, but retrying it with the
Finder gives me no problems either.
