Uwe's answer details how to do this. Note that \newcommand is available in lyx too. If something isn't available in lyx menus and dialogs, go to document->settings->latex preamble and enter your \newcommand there. Or use the "TeX" button, if you need latex code in the middle of your text. Helge Hafting
