Cross-referencing a section's title (not number)

Some time ago I posted a couple of questions about x-refs. I was asking 
if it is possible to:

1. cross-referencing to a separate file
2. having the section title appear in the cross-referencing document.

I have received helpful advice on the first item, but no replies on the 
second question. Should I infer that it is in fact impossible to do so? 
I looked into the prettyref package, but it seems to take care of a 
different problem. Perhaps there are other packages that could be used?
