Sorry,
I mean vertikal space, not horizontal space (I forgot to mention it).
The place of the numbering is ok. But I would like to have the document
more narrow vertically. Formulas created with C-M (C-H) don't fit with
this idea.
Thanks, Matthias Diehl
You need to fiddle with \abovedisplayskip, \abovedisplayshortskip,
\belowdisplayskip and \belowdisplayshortskip to compress vertical space.
Also be aware that hitting Enter before/after a formula in display
mode (C-S-M) adds extra vertical space, because LaTeX thinks you are
putting the formula in a paragraph by itself.
I suggest you download Herbert Voß's excellent guide to math mode
(ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/info/math/voss/mathmode/Mathmode.pdf).
What you want is covered in section 11.5 in version 2.09 of the guide (I
don't know what version Herbert is up to).
