My thanks to Jean-Pierre and Richard for the help. I have three files (one for the front, two for the back -- one landscape, one portrait) and won't have to go through this again the next time I need to print stock certificates.
I'm still puzzled why 1) specifying landscape in the document's preamble as part of the geometry or document class does nothing and 2) why the '-t' switch for dvips rotates the image counterclockwise rather than clockwise so it's upside down when viewed with gv. Perhaps that option was implemented by an Australian? Now back to the real world. Rich -- Richard B.
