LyX does not install document classes; it installs layout files (which tell LyX how to display documents in the GUI) for certain "well-known" classes. The document classes themselves should be part of your LaTeX distribution.
Does LyX start properly and, if so, can you create a new document in the default article class, or read the help documents (which I believe use the book class)? Alternatively, do you get an error message at start-up?
