... well that's simple. In Lyx, choose Insert --> Special Formatting --> Inter-word Space after the abbreviation's full stop.

There is also a keyboard shortcut: On a Mac, it is Ctrl + alt + Cmd + Space. Check with your keybindings doc.

stop and inserts whitespace accordingly - but it looks stupid.
