I exported my graphic with inkscape to both EPS and Postscript. They both look good when viewed with gv.
But they won't load with LyX's Insert->Graphics. They both cause a convert failed. I see that the convertDefault.sh says: # The default converter if no other has been defined by the user from the # Conversion->Converter tab of the Preferences dialog. I don't have any "Conversion" choice. But I do have Converters. I am not sure what the target it is converting to. So I modified the script to output. It said: convert -depth 8 eps:/home/reed/book/pf-book/images/example-diagram.eps \ ppm:/tmp/lyx_tmpdir2682126821a/example-diagram2682126821e.ppm So it wants to convert the postscript or EPS to bitmap PPM. So that is not for the LyX export, but for displaying in LyX interface itself. So I unchecked the "Show in LyX" checkbox. And the image actually displayed well in my exported PDF (pdf2latex was used). The EPS was sideways but looked good. So I chose Rotation Angle of 90 in the LyX: Graphics gui and this seems fine. Thank you, Rich, for reminding me try Postscript. I also tried to use the tex version (generated by inkscape) but LyX complained that now converter was setup for it. Jeremy C.
