After more investigation, the figures that yield the conversion error
(below) appear to be figures that I had previously uploaded to the
submissions website of a journal. Other figures load just fine. (So
this does not seem to be a 1.3.4 vs 1.4.1 problem.) Can the process
of uploading a figure file in some cases have an effect on the
original figure file, an effect that then prevents that figure from
loading into LyX?
