If anyone else would like to try it, you're more than welcome.
I'm happy to oblige, but I'm also confused. I downloaded the four files
you posted, and the PDF file has pages numbered i, 1, 2, just like the
DVI and PS files. Where's the problem?

I tried this both ways. I downloaded the test.lyx file and
generated .dvi,ps and pdf in both WinXP native 1.3.7 and
Cygwin 1.4.1 which is much like Linux. Everything displayed
i,1,2 as expected, including using gv, xpdf, acrord32 (AR)
xdvi (xdvik) and yap. That is they displayed correctly on
the bottom of the page. I also tested the files that came
with the test.lyx download which all displayed properly.
However, the program's page record doesn't match the doc
except with the exception of gv as noted below.

"On my system, when I View->Postscript, the gv page numbers reset at
page 1 (gv pages 1, 1 and 2 correspond to logical pages i, 1 and 2).
This is correct.
However, when I View->PDF(pdflatex) or any other conversion to pdf, my
gv page numbers are 1, 2 and 3 corresponding to logical page numbers i,
1 and 2. This results in the gv page numbers not matching the logical
page numbers."
SH: Yes GSview in Windows also behaves like dvi and pdf and not gv.
Gv shows 1,1,2 when I'm expecting to see 1,2,3 like the other programs
at the page bar. I don't know that gv is correct and the others wrong.
I've seen it all the time in pdf docs where the page number on the
doc doesn't match what the program/pdf reader displays as the page
number. And it's a pain when looking something up by using the index
when you have to add or substract 10 pages or so to the doc value.
http://www.gnome.org/projects/evince/ Is now the default for FC4.
"Evince is a document viewer for multiple document formats. It
currently supports pdf, postscript, djvu, tiff and dvi. The goal
of evince is to replace the multiple document viewers that exist
on the GNOME Desktop with a single simple application."
My idea is to replace gv with Evince and maybe your other viewers.
Then they should all work the same way. I haven't tested to see
if the other viewers work live gv or whether gv works like them.
