the line
\ui_file
"/Applications/Work/Latex/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/Lyx/ui/default.ui"
to
\ui_file
"/Applications/Work/Latex/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/ui/default.ui"
fixed the problem for me.

Can you fix this in the dmg-file (if it is not only a
problem in my setup)?
I'm guessing it's a "problem" with your setup. That is, I
think you must have set the ui file in your LyX-1.3.6
preference file to
"/Applications/Work/Latex/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/Lyx/ui/default.ui"
instead of simply "default.ui". LyX-1.4.0 changed the
location of that file, but the LyX/Mac installer doesn't
know to alter your setting, since we expect people simply
to enter "default.ui" (without the whole path to that
file).
Is that right? (Your 1.3.6 user's directory is intact, so
you can check your setting there.)
