(Maybe a good idea for the docu team to explain how the margins work,
with a picture)

Sorry, I don't know what the default margin is.  I tried to get latex to
tell me the value of \oddsidemargin for a a5 document, but it didn't
want to tell.

Sure, less than 10pt is for special use.
