As for bugs, my main concern on the Mac platform is the access of the templates as discussed before. This is no show-stopper, but a major problem for new users. I guess it is not a major problem to fix (just a matter of deciding which approach to take) so I hope it can be a subject for 1.4.1.

The default templates directory now gets copied to ~/Library/ Application Support/LyX-1.4/templates/default, so now you can access them via the File > New from template... dialog.
Perfect, that solves it!
Is it possible to also alter the "default path" for the open dialogue to this directory?

For me at least, Mac is smart enough to remember the last folder I used.
Hmmm, it hasn't learnt yet on my computer. I try to educate it for a while longer and see if it gets it ;-)

Another observation:
For some templates (e.g. kluwer and aa), the TeX-classes are missing. Is this just my configuration (I use i-Installer)? If not, would it be possible to include TeX-classes corresponding to the templates and install them if they do not exist?

They're not included with i-Installer. (At least I don't have them in my installation; you can check from Terminal.app with "kpsewhich kluwer.cls", e.g.)

I'd rather not start including more TeX classes than come with LyX itself by default (broadway.cls, cv.cls, hollywood.cls, lyxchess.sty, lyxskak.sty, revtex.cls). There are about 70 .layout files included with LyX, and I'm not going to try maintaining an updated collection of all corresponding .cls files.
That is very understandable. The idea was to have it included in the standard LyX-distribution, but if distributions on other platforms include them, I guess there is no major benefit.
