This was my initial thought as well, after all, the typesetting side of LaTeX's personality is much stronger than his/her structured document side. (Are their any archives that parse the meta data from documents submitted as LaTeX -- well maybe in mathematics, usw.?) > instead place the authors in standard environment after the title.
