Rats! That's still the opposite of what you want: a protected non-blank. I'm just making matters worse. I think that what I'd do in your situation (clunky as it is) would be to use ERT: \begin{hyphenrules}{nohyphenation} -ism \end{hyphenrules} The example on page 545 of TLC2 shows the result.
