Could you make it available for download?

I was actually planning to. The problem is that the binary I created did not appear to be self-contained (at least it didn't work when I moved it to another computer). If there are instructions on how to create a self-standing binary I'd be happy to give it a try.

There are instructions, but for some reason they were omitted from 1.4.0-pre3. Also, the LyX.app skeleton distributed with 1.4.0-pre3 is incomplete, and I'm a bit surprised you got it to work (unless you installed into another version of LyX.app).

What might explain the non-portability of the LyX.app you created is that you created it on one version of OS X and tried to move it to an earlier version.

Apart from that the file is huge (40 MB zipped), but that's not a problem with enough bandwidth. I guess it is due to debugging code.

Yes. You can strip it by doing "make install-strip" from within the lyx source directory.
