I was actually planning to. The problem is that the binary I
created did not appear to be self-contained (at least it didn't
work when I moved it to another computer). If there are
instructions on how to create a self-standing binary I'd be happy
to give it a try.
There are instructions, but for some reason they were omitted from
1.4.0-pre3. Also, the LyX.app skeleton distributed with 1.4.0-pre3 is
incomplete, and I'm a bit surprised you got it to work (unless you
installed into another version of LyX.app).
What might explain the non-portability of the LyX.app you created is
that you created it on one version of OS X and tried to move it to an
earlier version.
Apart from that the file is huge (40 MB zipped), but that's not a
problem with enough bandwidth. I guess it is due to debugging code.
Yes. You can strip it by doing "make install-strip" from within the
lyx source directory.
