I had the same problem and it had nothing to do with fonts not actually
being available, as implied by the previous answer you've received. My
problem was due to some strange fonts getting found ahead of the real ones
in my X fontpath. Changing the order of the font paths to search (using
xset, for instance, or fixing your X config file) fixed this.

I can't actually give you details as I cannot remember which font caused
the problem except to say that it was part of a truetype font package.

I'm using Debian stable.
