Although I Generally like to force new major sections to start on a new page too, you can be a little gentler and ask LaTeX not to make widows[1] or orphans[2] most of the time anyway. The LaTeX way is to make it a penalty to create such a line, using \clubpenalty and \widowpenalty [3]. I always put in my preamble: \widowpenalty=10000 \clubpenalty=10000 \raggedbottom (don't remember why, but the raggedbottom seemed to help the situation I had.)
