... but I have to admit that the last time I used a shell maybe is a
little bit too long ago. And it was only bash, never cshell...
Rob, could you give me a little more explanation? I can't find a way
to "update which(?) path" ... and I don't understand what this should
help? Is TeX or LyX using csh "secretly" behind my back during
installation or even longer?
(...I don't get it ... I really must be too stupid for computers :-/
Or my system is somehow "broken" - how could it be that I never read
about such problems with LyX on Macs in the mailing list archive or
any other resource on the Web? Where do all the working LyX
installations "come" from ...?)

No (not even one!) single document type is available. I can open my
old documents, but LyX warns me, that the original document type
specified in that document (like "book", "article" etc.) is not
available and therefore LyX will not be able to produce any output -
and it's right in saying so.
There's something wrong with your LaTeX installation. First of all,
run "sudo texhash" in Terminal.app. It will output the paths of your
TeX installation. Then, make sure you've got read/execute permissions
on the directories the texhash output shows. For example:

(the important permissions are marked; additional w's are optional)
It's crucial these permission also apply to enclosed files and
folders. If yours differ, correct them recursively, then run texhash
again.
In LyX, you should probably also specify a $PATH prefix in
Preferences. Use the path you can get from "which latex".
And finally, run Edit/Bearbeiten> Reconfigure in LyX, and restart
LyX.
