Yes, this seems to be exactly what I was looking for. Using the soul package and this command means I no longer have to individually deal with LyX's problem in hyphenating underlined words. Perhaps this could be added as a check-box option (like "use AMS Math") to the packages tab in the Document menu under Layout -- unless in the new version it already has been.
