I can no longer find where the SuSE rpm did in fact install the classes (let's suppose it did), but it is clear they were not in their right place. There was also the issue with DVI and PDF not appearing under "View". These and other problems made me go back to Mandrake, which is the distro in which I've been using Lyx for many years.
