The option you want is the PDF without anything in brackets.
If you are using the default UI the view menu should read
DraftDVI
DVI
PDF
PDF (dvipdfm)
PDF (pdflatex)
Update........
You want the first PDF option.
The same is true in File->Export
The PDF without any brackets goes via the ps file.

Subject: Re: PS -> PDF?
I have the latest version of Lyx for windows (1.3.6-1). I did install
a custom UI file, but I don't get the PS option even on the defualt
UI.

Hm... Have you installed one of the latest Versions of LyX? Have you
a custom ui file in your ~/.lyx/ui (resp. ~/Library/Application
Support/LyX/ui on MacOS X with LyX 1.3.6) dir and selected that in
your LyX prefs? (For Windows maybee someone who reg. works with or
has developed LyX on non-*nix Operating Systems could help you better)
The standard LyX Menu layout contains the ps to pdf option in the
"View" Menu.
It would help knowing more about your setup. (OS, LyX Version ...)
