Hello Alexander, I do not know much about MacOS X, but I suspect that the used character encoding is UTF-8 or something similar. If you export a LyX file as LaTeX, all the umlauts are exported as IS0-8859-15 coded characters, with numeric codes between 128 and 255. But in UTF-8 encoding, this marks a character code as sequence from at least the next two characters. And if there is no character assigned to the resulting code, your UTF-8 capable text editor will display silently nothing, which is a rather confusing behaviour. > But it is strange when i run latex on this documents i get a proper > pdf or dvi. LaTeX does not use UTF-8 (as far as I know) and so the "invisible" characters become visible in the DVI or PDF output. Quick and dirty solution: Use an editor for your LaTeX files, in which you can specify the character encoding. On my system, a Fedora Linux, I encounter similar problems and so I have to specify the character encoding for many of my files. The default editor of the GNOME desktop environment tries to "guess" the encoding, and sometimes it guesses wrong. An "intelligent" program can be a rather stupid thing...
