Aren't their RTF to latex converters?
rtf2latex2e works fine. Footnotes are converted as well as embeded
graphics (it converts them to eps and includes a float). The only
problem is, that Word tends to be not very consistent with styles and
formating. The converter of course interprets only the styles of the
original text, that could have mixed formating in your Word doc. e.g.
a footnote symbol in text formated as footnote-symbol followed by a
line of "ab-normal" text that indeed is footnote-style formated as
normal text. => You have to clean up styles in Word to get a "clean"
RTF document!
