  This is OK. The next obvious task to try is to use 
$ rpm -Va tetex*

  This will verify what is installed and what did change, but most of the 
warnings are harmless.

  If you have network access it should be as easy as:

# yum install lyx

  I agree, as several other messages in this thread shown, that it is easy to 
backup your data and install over it.

  There are lots of important differences between rh9 and fc4 to garantee that 
the install scripts will take care of all of them...
