lengths

Hi

I am trying to make a line on a page that is as long as the actual text in the 
paragraph, not the width of the text on the page. This may sound confusing but 
it should look like this

MY NAME
UNIVERSITY ADDRESS 
DATE
_____________________

Rather than a line that goes across the whole page. 

Obviously I can guess the measurement and put xcm or somesuch but is there a 
way to make latex work out the length, therefore making the setup adaptable to 
future applications.
