Thanks for your advice.
I did as you suggested and found the DVI->Postscript converter missing so I 
specfied a new one with dvips -o $$o $$i and got the View->PDF back.
But then  View->PDF gave me errors!
In desperation I reinstalled Lyx 1.3.6 and everything worked. The  
DVI->Postscript converter showed dvips -o $$o $$i; so I don't know what was 
wrong.
I think the lesson at this stage is NOT to Edit->Reconfigure.
I have a thesis due out in two weeks so these problems tend to give me the 
horrors! 
I've been using Lyx for the past couple of years and, overall, it is an 
excellent publishing tool.
