the figures are labelled

I need FIG. 1. Caption

Notice the colon has become a period.

At the moment I am using \renewcommand{\figurename}{FIG.}

to change the Figure to FIG. and that is fine. How do I change the following colon to a period (or full-stop for us English folk)?

For those who use another language than english the command to change the label is (here as example for the language "ngerman"):

\usepackage[ngerman]{babel}
\addto\captionsngerman{\renewcommand{\figurename}{FIG.}}

To format captions use the LaTeX-package "caption". The package option to change the label separator is:

\usepackage[labelsep=period]{caption}

Many thanks. Worked and the paper is now off to be printed.
