That's what 'type' field is for. See this:

@techreport{bewley:FRW-2002-1383,
  author = {Truman Bewley},
  title = {Fairness, Reciprocity, and Wage Rigidity},
  institution = {Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics at Yale
                   University},
  year = {2002},
  type = {Discussion Paper},
  number = {1383},
  url = {http://ssrn.com/abstract=348140}
}

Works like a charm for me (except that this whole reciprocity group of
people leads to nowhere for me, but that is not problem of LyX :-).
