Can anyone give me detailed info on how to install lyx (including xforms and xpm), either on solaris or cygwin running on a Windows PC.

It has 'issues' but most can be worked around.
I've been trying to do the latter myself, but haven't been able to get it working because I haven't been able to install xforms or xpm correctly so lyx can't find them.
If you want to go the Solaris route (and don't want to use the Qt frontend --- why not? It's much prettier), then grab XForms from
