Could you possibly be using a non-english locale? If so try setting LANG and/or
LC_TIME to an english locale (en_US for example). I have the problem with a
hebrew locale at the moment. With  LANG set to he_IL I get letters instead of
most math symbols. If I set it to en_US or LC_TIME to en_US the problem goes
away (very strange that LC_TIME affects it but ...).

When I reported the bug for the debian package the maintainer reported the same
problem with lyx-qt and said that LC_TIME doesn't solve it for lyx-xforms, LANG
has to be set to an english locale instead.
