- check if all LyXdirectories and subdirectories have write permissions for everybody
- start lyx from the console with the command
lyx -dbg 3
then reconfigure LyX and look in the console window if LyX cognizes the beamer layout file
- possibly the reconfiguration of LyX fails, have a look at

to find some Win98 specific tricks
