LyX is a fantastic piece of software and I have been trying to encourage staff and students at my University (Portsmouth) to adopt it. However, the University runs a centralised Novell network so it would have to be the Win32 port and anything interesting like fonts or libraries would have to be installed at runtime, Novell-style. Does anyone have any experience in doing this which might make this easier for the Uni computer people?
A feature which would do a great deal to persuade people to start using LyX would be the integration of a CAS like Maple or Matlab (the two used most here at Portsmouth). I have no idea how hard this would be to implement but I have seen other programs which talk to Maple and Matlab so an interface must exist.
If LyX was linked up to such a CAS, this would be a big step on the way to introducing a 'Maths spell checker'. A feature which could try to highlight inconsistencies in lines of algebra working would be a great incentive for both staff and students to adopt LyX.
