Thanks, Uwe. But, it becomes impossible to read the text since the word or phrase is replaced by a small, grey box that shows "IDX". There was a thread on this earlier this year and I understand that the next LyX version will change the marking so the indexed term can still be read.

I don't understand the problem, just delete the IDX-box. Creating and working with index entries works in the same way as for ERT.

When I delete the IDX box the contained word or phrase is also deleted. Deleting the box does not replace the unmarked text in the space. At least, not in 1.3.5 installed here. I'd be delighted if deletion of the box left the terms behind.

Yes, you can enter all index-specific commands to this window.
(The allowed commands are described in "The LaTEX Companion 2nd Edition".)

I read the chapter in TLC2 but was not clear that the manual LaTeX markup was to be done within the LyX IDX-box.
