There are two possible reasons: The convertyer fails, or lyx can't display the .ppm file correctly. What you could do is to open the generated .ppm files with xv or gimp. Then you'll see wether the file is corrupt, or lyx ca't display it.
Georg,
The files are not corrupted. I can move them from system to system and they display properly in lyx-1.3.4 and do not display properly in lyx-1.3.5.
I do still not understand why this happens at all. How did you install both .lyx versions? From source, or a binary package?
I downloaded the lyx-1.3.5 Slackware package from linuxpackages.net. I suspect that's where I got the 1.3.4, too. Or, the earlier version came with the distribution. Can't remember (memory leak). It's an annoyance, not a fatal flaw.
When's the next version of lyx due out? Perhaps that will return the image display to what it was before.
Many thanks,
Rich
